Strong earthquake shakes western Turkey
( 2003-07-07 15:43) (Agencies)

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 shook western Turkey on Sunday, the Istanbul-based Kandilli observatory said. No injuries or damage were reported.

The quake struck at around 10:10 p.m. and was centered in the town of Saros Korfezi, some 185 miles southwest of Istanbul.

In Canakkale, the nearest city, residents rushed out in the street in panic.

The quake could be felt as far away as Istanbul and the northwestern city of Edirne.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which lies atop active fault lines. Two massive quakes killed some 18,000 people in 1999.
