Police pile up sand bags to keep the water at
bay in the Huangpu River in Shanghai on Thursday July 3, 2003. A
temporary sandbag wall, built a day earlier as a secondary safeguard
against flooding, tumbled at Thursday noon due to the combined effects of
river tide and ongoing ground subsidence. The floodwall cracked Wednesday
in the aftermath of a ground subsidence caused by work on nearby
cross-river rail tunnels.[newsphoto.com.cn]
A pumping station inside Shanghai's anti-flood
wall that had withstood high waters on the Huangpu River finally subsides
under pressure, July 3, 2003, following the break of a dyke
below the wall. The collapse was caused by work on nearby cross-river rail
tunnels on July 1. More than 500 armed police have been busy dealing with
the emergency. [newsphoto.com.cn] |
