Soccer-Zamorano keeps Chile guessing over retirement date ( 2003-07-03 09:18) (Reuters)
Ivan Zamorano kept Chileans guessing about his future on Wednesday, saying he had made his decision on his retirement date but would not make it public until next week. The 36-year-old Chile striker, who has returned home to play for Colo Colo after spending 14 years abroad, is hoping to win the domestic championship in the final against Cobreloa which will be played over two legs on Thursday and Sunday. "Next week, I'm going to take the (retirement) decision," said Zamorano, who announced last month that he would quit some time this year. "Or rather, I've taken the decision already but I haven't made it public. "I've played in many important finals but I think this one is special. The fact it's with Colo Colo gives it a special meaning," added Zamorano, who supported the club as a boy. "For a long time, I've seen myself lifting the cup with Colo Colo. Probably since the time I was in my mother's womb. I'm not going to waste this moment. "This is a long dreamed-of moment -- not just by me but by my father, who is in the sky." Zamorano, who scored 34 goals in 67 internationals, has had mixed fortunes this season. He has notched eight goals but has also been troubled by a knee injury which kept him out of action for nearly two months. Colo Colo play hosts to Cobreloa in the first leg on Thursday. The second match is in Calama, at 2,600 metres above sea level in the Atacama desert. Cobreloa are coached by Zamorano's close friend Nelson Acosta, who is also attempting to win his first Chilean title. Acosta, born in Uruguay, led Chile to the 1998 World Cup and will leave Cobreloa next week to take charge of the Bolivian national team.
