Boxing-Las Vegas hosts Holyfield-Toney showdown ( 2003-07-03 09:18) (Reuters)
The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas will host the heavyweight showdown between Evander Holyfield and James Toney on October 4. "When you think of big heavyweight boxing events, you immediately think of Las Vegas and Mandalay Bay," promoter Dan Goossen said in a statement on Wednesday. "It is a tremendous fight staged in the fight capital of the world." The clash between Holyfield and IBF cruiserweight champion Toney was announced on June 24 but the venue had not yet been decided. Holyfield, 40, the only four times world heavyweight champion in the history of boxing, ruled among the cruiserweights before moving up a division in July 1988. After winning world titles in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions during the early 1990s, Toney picked up the IBF cruiserweight crown with a points victory over champion Vassiliy Jirov in April this year. Toney will be fighting as a heavyweight for the first time. Holyfield's last bout was a defeat at the hands of Chris Byrd for the vacant IBF title last December.
