Dam may open to tourists
( 2003-06-14 14:04) (Eastday.com)

The hydroelectric project on the Yangtze River will probably be included in the new Three Gorges tour, with the admission fee to the dam not to exceed 50 yuan (US$6), Zhang Jianguo, president of Changjiang Three Gorges Tourism Development Co Ltd said yesterday.

Zhang made these remarks during an interview by the Beijing Youth Daily, in response to a recent survey by the newspaper on attitudes to the new Three Gorges tour.

According to the survey, more than half of people in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou hope to visit the Three Gorges dam, the world's largest hydroelectric project, in their future tour to Three Gorges.

The dam started to store water two weeks ago and the project has entered the third stage of construction.

The dam will add a human aspect to the renowned Three Gorges scenery, Zhang said.

Erected high on the Yangtze River, it is a tourist attraction in itself and also offers a bird's-eye view of the Three Gorges area, he added.

The first two stages of the project will be open to visitors. The third stage, however, which is not yet complete, probably won't allow visits due to potential dangers, Zhang added.

Sights include the electricity generators--which will start producing power this July--the permanent dam gale, the computer control center and the dyke.
