Nine Chinese killed in Algerian quake buried in Algiers

Nine Chinese construction workers killed in Algeria's devastating earthquake have been buried in an eastern suburb of Algiers, official report said on Thursday.

The victims, ranging in age from 26 to 68, died in the collapse of their dormitory in last week's 6.8 magnitude quake. All employees of the Shanghai-based CSCEC firm, they had been resting after supper when the quake hit.

Chinese diplomats and nine other Chinese workers injured in the quake attended the funeral. A memorial service was held concurrently in Shanghai for family members and company employees.

Algeria's quake killed at least 2,218 people and injured 9,497 others, according to Algerian government figures.

Thousands of Chinese work oversees as contract laborers or overseers of construction projects in developing countries, many of them paid for out of Chinese government grants.

Those killed in Algiers had been working on a 14-story, 2,000 unit housing complex in the suburb of Bab Ezzouar.
