WHO representative, experts discuss SARS control in China
( 2003-05-13 10:20 ) (8 )

It is important for Japanese experts and the World Health Organization (WHO) to cooperate in assisting Chinese health departments to control severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Ohara Hiroshi, head of a visiting Japanese experts team, said in Beijing Monday.

Hiroshi made the remark during talks with Henk Bekedam, the WHO representative in China. He said they will cooperate closely with the Chinese side on hospital infection control.

The Japanese experts Monday visited the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital, a designated hospital for SARS patients.

Hiroshi said they will provide SARS control help and advice to the health workers in the hospital, as well as other hospitals in Beijing.

Bekedam said the WHO and Japanese experts have the same aim, and he hoped that by cooperating they can help China to fight and curb the SARS epidemic.

The Japanese team, which arrived here Sunday, is made up of two doctors from the International Medical Center of Japan, one representative of the Japanese Foreign Ministry and one from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

They will also visit the Disease Prevention and Control Center, hold seminars and write reports on SARS.
