Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has signed liability protocols
related to the relocation of residents in preparation for the upcoming
construction phases of the Three Gorges Project.
The end of 2002 saw the completion of resident relocation for the second
phase of the massive hydropower project, with over 645, 000 people moved to new
homes.
The relocation effort, which began in 1992, has covered 11 districts and
counties in Chongqing, as well as in central China's Hubei Province. In
addition, new housing, totaling about 2,845 square meters, was built to
accommodate the newly-displaced residents.
It is estimated that by 2009, the date set for completion of the project,
over 1.13 million people will have been relocated. Eleven provinces and
municipalities in east China and along the Yangtze River have been designated to
accept displaced residents for the upcoming third and fourth phases of the
relocation work.
