Beijing will hold firm to the principle of¡°financial prudence" in running the 2008 Olympic Games and in the preparation for the Games, said Mr. Liu Qi, Mayor of Beijing. Liu Qi, also the President of BOCOG, made the remarks at the first meeting with the visiting IOC Coordination Commission on December 3rd, 2002. Shortly after being awarded the right to host the games, Beijing promised the international community to be¡°pragmatic¡±when considering the construction of Olympic venues and related facilities. Liu Qi said,¡°The Olympic construction shall not only provide top-quality venues for the Olympic Games, but also leave a precious legacy to the development of sport in both China and the rest of the world.¡± Liu also pledged to adhere to the policy of¡°opening up" when preparing for and hosting the Games. BOCOG kicked off public tendering for the construction of the Olympic venues and related facilities in October 2002.
