( 2002-09-13 17:09 ) (8 )

Five people were killed and eight others injured when two buses collided on a highway in south China's Guangdong Province Thursday.

According to local sources, the collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. Thursday near Zhaoqing on National Highway 321. A double-deck sleeper bus, which was traveling westward from Guangzhou, the provincial capital, slipped out of control on the wet road and collided with another bus heading in the opposite direction.

The latter bus, which carried 16 passengers, overturned three meters away from a river after having rushed about a dozen meters, one witness said.

In the accident, all the five people killed and eight injured were from the latter bus. Only three people remained unhurt.

Six ambulances from the local first-aid center of Zhaoqing City rushed to the site of the accident. All the injured, including three in critical conditions, have been hospitalized.
