Traffic accidents plague Xinjiang streets

Four traffic accidents in a week left 14 people dead and nearly 100 injured in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, police said Monday.

One accidents which took place Sunday night left three people dead at the scene, another 10 severely injured and 45 with minor injuries. An unlicensed driver, Lu Yuguo, lost control of a truck, which slid into an eight-meter ditch with 78 on it. The local police are seeking the fleeing driver.

On July 23, a passenger car in the Altay region overturned on No. 217 state highway, leaving seven people dead, including one Mongolian, and 20 others injured.

On July 25, an accident happened in the Aksu region when a cross-country vehicle was trying to pass a section of flood- damaged road. Four people were killed and a nine-year-old girl, the only survivor, was still receiving medical treatment.

At 12:00 am on July 27, a passenger car heading for a local scenic spot overturned due to brake failure, leaving 20 people with injuries ranging from severe to minor.
