()
06/07/2002
The frequent traffic accidents are impacting the safety structure of Xupu and Yangpu bridges, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

In April, 12 comparatively serious traffic accidents occurred on the bridges, resulting in damaged equipment.

The worst incident involved huge trucks breaking the wrap of the cables, which are critical to safety on the suspension bridge.

According to observations by the administrative office, a total of 38 overloaded vehicles crossed the Xupu Bridge from 9:30am to 10:30am on a recent morning.

One vehicle with the biggest load of 12 tons was even loaded of 38 tons of goods.

Officials said that overloaded trucks are bad for the bridges. The daily combined traffic flow on Nanpu, Yangpu and Xupu bridges is over 100,000 this year, 7 per cent higher than that of last year.

Overloaded vehicles breaking down on the way and dashing into other vehicles cause damage to the dashing-proof walls, lamps, warning telephone stalls, fire-fighting and supervising equipment.

A manager of Xupu Bridge surnamed Jiang said that over 200 overloaded vehicles crossed the bridge last month.
