China's Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo has stressed the need for China to find new jobs for its millions of laid-off workers, saying that the whole society should show care and support for the work.

"The deepening of the reform of state-owned enterprises and the economic restructuring efforts will lead to the withdrawal of more disadvantaged enterprises from the market, hence producing ever-increasing pressure for re-employment," the vice-premier said during a visit April 12-13 to this metropolis in southwest China.

While China should continue to improve its social security system, Wu said, its focus should be gradually transferred to finding new jobs for those who have been laid off.

The vice-premier stressed that greater efforts have to made in developing the service sector, particularly community-centered services, as well as the private sector.

He also urged local authorities to more faithfully and strictly implement all government policies designed to promote re- employment for laid-off workers.
