Model port for customs () 08/03/2001 Model port for customsDHL-Sinotrans Pudong Airport Gateway has come onstream, becoming one of the Shanghai APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation) Model Port projects. It is jointly developed by the customs authorities of China and the United States. Zhang Bin, chairman of DHL-Sinotrans Express Ltd, said the gateway cost more than 20 million yuan (US$2.4 million). It consists of a customs supervisory system, an automatic safety and inspection system and other facilities, and can handle 10,000 pieces of cargo per hour. Foreign currency deposits down Local Chinese banks are witnessing a sharp decrease in the growth of foreign currency deposits. Up to June, their combined balance of foreign currency deposits reached US$16.1 billion, up US$28.52 million on earlier this year. But the growth still meant a US$926 million decline compared with the growth between January and June of 2000. A People's Bank of China source said the opening-up of the B-share market for domestic traders in February led to the decline. Insurer plans for float Dazhong Insurance Co Ltd is vying to be the first Chinese insurer to float on the domestic stock market. Its Sino-German joint venture, Allianz Dazhong Insurance Co Ltd, is said to be satisfied with its development in the Chinese mainland with its premium in the first half of 2001 tripling over the same period last year. Better management solution Chinese companies have created another management improvement solution, CPC (collaborative product commerce) solution, which is effective especially in co-ordinating production with commerce. Last week, Accenture joined with Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) and Sun Microsystems to promote the CPC solution. Crane damage claims filed Relatives of nine victims of the gantry crane accident in Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard of Pudong have made claims for 100,000 yuan (US$12,048) in casualty insurance from the Shanghai Branch of American International Assurance (AIA). One of them had 60,000 yuan (US$7,229) of life insurance paid. The nine victims were from Tongji University, sources from AIA said. Headquarters moved Weber Shandwick Worldwide has moved its China headquarters from Beijing to Shanghai and has appointed Oliver Stelling managing director of the China operation. Motor show in December Shanghai Motor Show 2001 will be held at Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Pudong from December 9 to 16. Organized by Hannover-Messe International GmbH, Hannover Fairs China Ltd, and Orient International Holding Advertising & Exhibition Co Ltd, the event has attracted a number of automakers including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Citroen, Fiat, GM, Honda, Toyota, Saab and Volkswagen. St. Regis in town The St. Regis Shanghai, a five-star hotel invested by the Hongta Group from Yunnan Province, began its soft opening on Saturday. The hotel has 318 rooms and boasts the largest standard guestroom in Shanghai at 48 square metres. Cary Gray, the hotel's general manager, believes its unique 24-hour butler service will make St. Regis a strong competitor in the Shanghai market. World trade online Meetchina.com launched the eTrade Pioneer (version 2.0) in Shanghai on Tuesday. The eTrade Pioneer is a professional web-tool for international trade. On the same day, MeetChina.com also signed a co-operation deal with SAPMarkets to gain a wider access in e-business. B&Q flagship outlet The UK-based B&Q chain announced it will open its local flagship outlet later this month. Located at Yangpu District, the US$20 million outlet will have a total area of more than 26,000 square metres, which makes it the company's largest retailing outlet. Prior to the opening of the new store, B&Q opened outlets in Baoshan and Xuhui districts. Week-long show on digital TV A week-long digital television show is being held at Huijin Department Store until Sunday. Models of digital TVs and auxiliary devices produced by domestic companies are showcased. Shanghai has been chosen for pilot operations of digital TVs. Thumbs up on GM facilities The State Environmental Protection Administration has declared after a three-day inspection that Shanghai GM's environmental protection facilities, valued at about 100 million yuan (US$12 million), have met standards. Planning software HCG (China) Ltd has signed a contract with Taiwan-based PreVision Technology Ltd to push forward use of enterprise resource planning (ERP). The software will help establish a computerized information management system that integrates resources like customer demand, production and raw materials.
