Translation forum promotes community of common destiny

"Translation plays an important role in spreading Chinese culture," said Li Shujing, professor and Party secretary of the School of Foreign Languages of Peking University.

"With translation, the world can better understand China and vice-versa." Li added.

In the second half of the forum, Roger T. Ames, an expert in Chinese philosophy at the University of Hawaii, explained the unbalance of cultural transmission between the east and the west.

He also called for more integration - with the help of Confucianism - between the two civilizations.

Jidi Majia, vice-chairman of the Chinese Writers Association, touched upon how to have more effective and deeper communication.

Literature, said the poet, can play a bigger and better role in shaping the community with a shared future for humankind.

Jidi Majia, of Yi ethnic minority, has published numerous poetic anthologies since the 1980s and is considered one of the greatest poets of minorities in China.

His work has been translated into many languages, and he has been awarded numerous international prizes, including the Sholokhov Memorial Medal for Literature in 2006 from the Russian Writers Association, and a Certificate for Outstanding Contributions in Poetry from the Bulgarian Writers Association that same year.

A translation association - populated by five universities and two publishing agencies - was established at the forum.

Zhu Yuan, director of the MTI education center of the School of Foreign Languages, Renmin University of China, addressed the establishment.
