The Linwu duck is one of the eight most famous ducks in China and is known for its quality meat and eggs. With a breeding history of over 1,000 years, the duck once served as a tribute to the imperial court.
Linwu ducks grow fast, are large, lay many eggs, have strong adaptability, and produce delicate meat that is lean and tasty. The ducks are reputed for "nourishing Yin and reducing pathogenic fire, beautifying the features and building up body". They are commonly referred to as "hook mouth ducks" by local residents. They are popular in the market for their unique taste and are often cooked by roasting, frying or stewing techniques or by processing into boiled or pressed salted ducks.
The Wulin duck was recorded in Hunan Province Livestock and Poultry Breeds in 1984. In 1986, the duck won a gold medal for quality agricultural product in Hunan province. It has been listed by the provincial, municipal and county governments for the seed cultivation project and the key agriculture industrialization project.
