Originating from folk songs, the flower-drum opera has gradually developed into its current performance form with a female and a clown singing and dancing. With over 400 traditional repertoires, the flower-drum opera mainly depicts the folk's life and tells stories about people's labor, love, and family conflicts. It shows its distinctive local characteristics.

Yueyang flower-drum opera mainly prevails in Yueyang, Miluo, Linxiang and some towns in the south of Hunan province. The main tune of Yueyang flower-drum opera is called "Qinqiang".

With the Changsha accent as the stage language, Changsha flower-drum opera is popular in Changsha, Xiangtan, Zhuzhou, Ningxiang, Liuyang and Pingjiang. It has great social impact and has become the most popular flower-drum opera in Hunan province.

The flower-drum opera has a history of over 160 years and is developed from labor songs, folk songs and local flower drama. The large number of operetta and highlights are the most representative and unique part of Changsha flower-drum opera. It has three types of tunes, namely, "Chuandiao" "Daluoqiang" and "Xiaodiao". The accompany band for it can be divided into civil and military scenes.
