In the southern part of Ningyuan county, Yongzhou city, Jiuyi Mountain is a national AAAA scenic area. Occupying 200 square kilometers, the scenic area is a habitat of many rare plants and wild animals including the unique Jiuyi spot bamboo.

The mountain is called Jiuyi because there are nine (Jiu in Chinese) peaks. On the mountain is the mausoleum of Emperor Shun, a key cultural relic under state-level protection and one of the ten most famous cultural heritage sites in Hunan province. The mausoleum was originally built in the Xia Dynasty (c.21st century-16th century BC) and is the earliest recorded tomb of the Chinese people’s ancestors.

Historically, the mausoleum was a place for emperors and kings from various periods in ancient China to pay their respects to the Emperor Shun, one of the five earliest emperors of China. Since 2000, cultural tourist festivals and sacrificial ceremonies have been held every year and attract a large number of tourists.

Another 37 scenic spots in the area include the Garden of Cuckoo, the Garden of Spot Bamboo, Yongfu Temple, Zixia Rock and Yuguan Rock, all of which are memorable and fascinating sites for tourists to visit.
