Autism affects about one percent of the world's population, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Known as a complex developmental brain disorder, it is characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and a restricted repertoire of interests and activities. It's caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences.

In China, more than 100 million people have been diagnosed with the disorder, with over 2 million of them aged under 14, according to a 2015 survey.
