Zhao Bandi, a Chinese contemporary artist whose several works aroused debates, staged a performance art-style party titled Chopin Underwater in a countryside villa in Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan province, on Sept 12.

The 50-year-old artist saw a girl playing Chopin's works on a grand piano — they were both in a pool — and painted on a canvas. He was observed by many guests including collectors of his art, artists, musicians and celebrities.

"Chopin's music sounded so close while also far away. It not only resonated with my heart but also the surrounding of our life," he said of why to hold such an event.

"The sadness, happiness, despair and beauty in his works are also how I feel of today's world, making me to transform the realities into a party."

The party was broadcast alive online and some people criticized it as a behavior to flaunt fame and wealth. Zhao responded that what he really wanted to showcase was art, as one of the many levels of the world that people needed to touch on.
