La Sylphide and El Testament d'Amelia
Dancers from Royal Danish Ballet and National Ballet of China
Premiered in l836, La Sylphide is the representative repertoire of the Danish Ballet School. It tells an aesthetic love tragedy. A Scottish peasant James was going to marry his cousin Effie. However, on the day of their engagement, he was seduced by a witch's evil magic and abandoned Effie. He followed the witch's order, ran into the woods with Sylphide, the fairy of the forest, and wrapped a scarf around her.He thought in that case he would have her forever, but tangled by the scarf, Sylphide died in James arms.
Choreographed by Wang Sizheng, a talented young dance designer from the National Ballet of China, El Testament d'Amelia drew inspiration from a classical guitar music adapted from a Catalan folk song. As a tribute to the 60th anniversary of Beijing Dancing Academy, it mixes the style of music drama as well as the body language of dance, and tells a tragedy about love, humanity and life.
