A study conducted by Shanghai's Hurun Research Institute has identified 51 individuals of Chinese origin who have donated 500 million yuan ($80 million) or more during their lifetime to good causes, five more than it found last year.

According to the Hurun Global Chinese Big Philanthropy Report 2016, a benchmark finding released on Wednesday in Beijing, 25 of the biggest donors were from the Chinese mainland, followed by 12 from Hong Kong, five from the United States and four from Taiwan and two are from Malaysia. Macao, Indonesia and Singapore had one benefactor each.

Four people of Chinese origin alive today have donated more than 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) including Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, Alibaba's Jack Ma and Tencent's Ma Huateng from the Chinese mainland and Facebook's Priscilla Chan from the United States.
