The Party chief of Guangzhou is under investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and laws, a term usually referring to corruption, the country's top anti-graft body said on Friday.
Wan Qingliang, 50, is the latest high-ranking official to be probed in a high-profile campaign against graft.
The investigation into Wan was announced in a statement by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection on its website. The statement did not give further details.
