Sophia University, located in the heart of Tokyo, started with a global mission almost a century ago.
Even back then its goal was to nurture students who would be internationally minded and globally aware.
Founded by the globetrotting, institutionally dynamic Jesuit order in 1913, Sophia University was the first Catholic university in Japan. "Because of our Jesuit and Catholic background, we already started as an international institution even before others were talking about it," said Tadashi Takizawa, president of Sophia University. "We train students who can learn in and adapt to different environments."
