Singer on the mend after his TCM treatment backfires badly

China Daily | Updated: 2011-09-23 07:49

Singer Chyi Chin was set to return home earlier this week after being hospitalized for burn injuries, when a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment went wrong.

He suffered second-degree burns on his face and back after cupping treatment at his Beijing home, which is done by heating cups and applying them to the body for an airtight seal, thereby creating suction and effecting blood flow.

The accident occurred when the therapist spilled alcohol on him, causing a fire on the 51-year-old Taiwan singer's body. He has canceled commercial performances for the next three months and according to Apple Daily stands to lose at least NT$48 million ($1.7 million). However, he says he won't sue as the TCM center would not be able to pay out much anyway.
