Apple hit by poisoning row

The California-based maker of iPods, iPhones and iPads acknowledged for the first time in the Apple Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report released on Feb 15 that 137 workers at the Suzhou facility of Wintek, one of Apple's touch-screen suppliers, had suffered adverse health effects following exposure to n-hexane, a chemical in cleaning agents used in some manufacturing processes. BEIJING - As victims suffering from chemical poisoning at one of Apple Inc's supplier factories waited anxiously for a reply from the United States' company over remedy and compensation, calls for big multinational businesses to build a greener and safer supply chain and to alleviate harm to workers and the environment are growing ever louder.
