DPRK celebrates 62nd anniversary of founding
PYONGYANG - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday celebrated the 62nd anniversary of its founding as the world's attention continues to focus on a major conference of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), the first of its kind in 44 years.
State broadcasters were airing patriotic songs throughout the day while the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper ran an editorial urging the country's civilians and servicemen to stand closely united around the WPK, which is led by top leader Kim Jong-il. A state banquet will be held at People's Palace of Culture on the night to mark the special occasion.
In the streets of Pyongyang, national flags were flying high. There was less traffic than usual, and many DPRK citizens chose to spend the holiday at home.
