Mixed responses to courtyard performance

By Yang Wanli | China Daily | Updated: 2009-12-10 08:06

Theater enthusiasts may soon be able to enjoy dramas presented in traditional courtyard houses in Beijing's Xicheng district and the hutong of Houhai.

A plan is under discussion to present performances in Xicheng district, which is home to the National Center for the Performing Arts and Meilanfang Theater, according to Qi Yongfeng, professor of culture research at Communication University of China. Bringing drama into a courtyard house is part of the plan.

"I think presenting drama in courtyard houses is a great idea," Qi said. "Drama will bring new vitality to the house, while the house offers a traditional backdrop."
