Nadal, Djokovic ready to live up to billings

The men's top two seeds, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, are itching to kick off their Asian campaigns at the China Open.

Spaniard Nadal, the No 1 seed, has overcome recent injuries to be the man to beat in the men's draw while Djokovic, the No 2 seed, is keen to go as far as he can at the National Tennis Center.

Nadal, Djokovic ready to live up to billings

Nadal, who has not played since his US Open semifinal loss to eventual champion Juan Martin del Potro last month, withdrew from last week's Thailand Open due to a stomach injury. However, he felt fit enough to come to the Beijing, where he won the title in 2005. He should also have fond memories of the venue as it is where he clinched Olympic gold last year.

"It's been a difficult year for me because I had a knee injury and then an abdominal injury at the US Open. Still, I'm happy being ranked No 2 (in the world) and to have won three master series events and one Grand Slam title (this season)," Nadal said yesterday.

"It's important for me to finish the year as good as possible and try to be ready for the Davis Cup final and then have time to practise to be ready for next year."

Although he has weathered an injury-hit season, Nadal said he did not intend to change his aggressive playing style.

"I've played the past five years without dropping from No 1 or No 2 in the rankings - except one week this year. So if you're not fit and your body is not in good condition, it's impossible to be in the top two for five years.

"Yes, I have an aggressive style of game but I don't think anyone can choose what style to play I am happy with my game. I have had a very good career so far."

The 23-year-old will start his China Open campaign against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

His biggest rival for the title is Djokovic.

The world No 4 is brimming with confidence entering his first China Open.

"Considering the good results I've had over the past two seasons at Asian tournaments, I expect a good result here. I always go for the highest possible result and I'm confident right now," said Djokovic, who claimed the Shanghai Masters Cup title last year.

"I think I played a good tournament at the US Open and I am physically and mentally prepared. I am aware that there are four or five more big tournaments before the end of the season."

Djokovic, 22, will face Victor Hanescu of Romania in the opening round today.
