Dancing in the dark

Broadway show Luma, an interactive performance that relies heavily on audience participation, smoke and mirrors and the interplay of darkness and light, will perform at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center later this month.

Instead of being asked to turn off their cell phones, members of the audience are encouraged to switch them on and wave them around as if they were cigarette lighters at a rock concert.

Ploys, conceits and novelties such as this help the show transcend the parameters of normal stage productions to truly delight the senses.
