Childhood memories

By Wu liping | China Daily | Updated: 2009-04-11 08:13

Taiwan artist Yuan Jinta retraces the countryside of his childhood with his ink brushes. Lunch in the summer under a melon tree, playing with scarabs and earthworms, fishing in the streams - these are some of the themes of his creations.

However, under Yuan's brush, these idyllic pictures are given a strange twist - for example, the insects are given a deformed look or the background is deliberately made contradictory with images of skyscrapers.

The artist tries to convey that the picturesque images etched in his memory no longer exist with the expansion of cities and the destruction of the natural environment.
