Corruption in construction

China Daily | Updated: 2009-02-14 08:11

The government must intensify crack-downs on corruption in the construction industry when numerous projects backed by the State Council's stimulus package are soon to be kicked off across the country, says an article on the website www.rednet.cn. The following is an excerpt:

Wu Shaowen, the former construction bureau chief of Xihu district, Hangzhou, was reportedly sentenced to death recently for taking almost 10 million yuan in bribe for a project to protect the Xixi wetland. In the same project, not long ago, Chen Jing, a manger from the construction company, was also sentenced to death for taking 5 million yuan in bribes.

The Hangzhou municipal government has laid out various measures to prevent behind-the-scene manipulation in construction projects. But corrupt officials still have cunning ways to accept bribes.
