BEICHUAN, Sichuan: The local government here has defended its purchase of a 1.1 million-yuan ($161,000) SUV, saying the rough terrain vehicle is vital for reconstruction work in the county, the worst hit in the May 12 earthquake.

Jing Dazhong, chief of the Beichuan county government, told the Southern Metropolis Daily that his county purchased the Toyota Land Cruiser "mainly for the use of reconstruction work".

A county government notice on Jan 12 said a contract had been awarded to a car dealer in Mianyang city to buy the Toyota SUV for 1.1 million yuan.

The county also announced that it had asked three other dealers to deliver a Nissan SUV, a Toyota Camry sedan, and a Changfeng SUV.
