Food safety standards

China Daily | Updated: 2008-12-20 07:52

The double standards in manufacturing food products for export and domestic consumption must be abandoned, says an article in Guangzhou Daily. Following is an excerpt:

When recently dealing with food safety issues, some deputies to the National People's Congress in Guangdong province questioned why 99.8 percent of exported food products could pass safety tests, but the rate for domestically consumed products was only 70 percent.

The provincial quality chief replied that common people cannot afford safe food as it would be too expensive for them.
