Kipling and kamikazes

Walking into the newest addition to the Tango-Starlive nightlife fortress feels like walking into the Jungle Book or Angkor Wat.

The front hallway is patrolled by a twelve-foot stone panther, as well as a number of bodhisattvas and arhats, carved elegantly into the walls. Despite its lustful red lighting, the large size of this lounge resembles a furniture outlet with its legions of satin sofas and armchairs far outnumbering patrons. Prices start around 35 yuan for imported beers. Hoegaardens go for 45 yuan, and The Godfather (whiskey and brandy ladled on top of rock ice) is 60 yuan. There's an extensive wine list as well. Service is excellent, there are free peanuts and waitresses speak English.

Flyers on the tables expound Tantra's philosophy, encouraging patrons to exercise moderation-Ca strange mantra for a bar that is defined by its excesses. In moderation or not, both cigar-puffing entrepreneurs and well-heeled, backpacking hippies may comfortably mingle here.
