Cocktail hour with French(cityweekend)Updated: 2007-05-25 11:28 A peritif a la Francaise is out to affirm some French stereotypes and to break others. Gourmet food and fine wine, oui! Snooty and intimidating? Non! Annually, on the first Thursday of June, cities are injected with a bit of joie de vivre by the Aperitif a la Francaise, a celebration of French culture and cuisine. The concept is rooted in the beloved Gallic ritual of aperitif¨Chaving after-work refreshment "in a friendly atmosphere with friends before dinner, like happy hour," says organizer Marina Legrand. On June 7, such a cocktail fete will be held in Shanghai "to promote French culture, food, and wine to the Chinese market, to show that French food culture is accessible." This convivial affair is one way that Sopexa seeks to broaden understanding and appreciation of yummy things from France. Central to the friendly message that "Made in France" is actually simple and accessible is the festive spirit of discovery¨Cthe soul of Aperitif. The Shanghai soiree will be "Breaking Era" with a buffet of the past, present, and future of French food. The Hotel Sofitel Hyland is cooking up a spread of traditional dishes, actual preparations served worldwide today, and edible musings on the possible future of French gastronomy. To complement the delectable fare, wine and aperitif spirits will be poured. A play, animation, and dance show will be featured throughout the night. There will be live music, games, and delightful things to take home and win. We're already giddy at the thought of the roundtrip air tickets to Paris up for grabs. If the City of Light casts a luxurious hold over your imaginations(and appetites), book yourselves a ticket to the Aperitif a la Francaise. Escape to Paris for a night to eat, drink, and be merry with the friendly French. When: Thursday, June 7 |
