For those coming to Shanghai for a short stay, a nice way to remember the days in Shanghai is to buy various souvenirs. So here we list five Shanghai souvenir shops.

Younik

Younik is unique, a concept store serving as a showcase for the works of six local fashion and jewellery designers. Cashmere is cheap in China and Jenny Ji has made the most of its luxury with highly original designs such as a coat for 6,000 yuan. Bargains like this should be snapped up before the designers become famous. Dennis Yang specialises in hand-painted leather, while artist Jiang Qiong Er focuses on jewellery. The other artists are Lu Kun, Zheng Da and Chang Sifeng.

Jooi Design

This is not easy to find. Go 50 metres up Lane 210, which leads off Taikang Road, until you see the entrance to what looks like an old factory building on the right. On the second floor you'll find Jooi, the brainchild of a young Danish entrepreneur, Trina Targett. The company¡¯s intricately embroidered silk bags, scarves and dresses have achieved such success that they are stocked by London's Victoria and Albert museum. Homewares are also on sale, including silk cushions, cashmere throws and suede sofas.

Jin Zhi Yu Ye

Qipaos (shift-like dresses with high slits) and Chinese silk jacket make good gifts. Maoming Road is brimming with boutiques selling both, and Jin Zhi Yu Ye is one of the best. You might pay anything from 1,500 to 4,300 yuan for a chocolate-brown silk dress decorated with a hand-embroidered peacock motif. The two old ladies who run the shop can help you pick out matching shoes and bag.

Location: 72 South Maoming Rd

Lilli's

Lilli's four shops stock pretty hand bags, silk-bound diaries and hand-crafted jewellery (some featuring Chinese pearls). Gifts for men include silver bookmarks, key rings and money clips decorated with traditional motifs. From the front, the main shop looks like an apartment block. The boutique is on the right-hand side as you enter the ground floor.

Shanghai Trio

For an embroidered gift, try Virginie Fournier¡¯s boutique in Xintiandi. Her simple dressing gowns, cushion covers, table cloths and even baby clothes are delicately embellished with traditional Chinese motifs (butterflies, dragons, fish and the like).
