Time for alcohol revolution (cityweekend) Updated: 2006-08-18 09:52
As Merlot replaces maotai and Bordeaux competes with baijiu, Beijing is
undergoing something of an alcohol revolution, at least among the city's
wealthier citizens.
Despite its remote location and less than ideal surroundings (close to a
weed-choked waterway), Palette Vino's tasteful, Mediterranean-esque interior
decor and relaxed atmosphere make it a good place to sample or buy fine
international wines from a hand-picked range of grapes and growers.
Pastas, salads and grilled dishes are the main order of the day on the
compact menu, both the tuna and beef tenderloin are favorites among the regular
patrons. Wine tasting events also regularly occur, usually accompanied in summer
months by al fresco dining on the terrace. If you've seen the Great Wall, but
are not so keen on tasting the vintage, Palette Vino could be the place for you.
