Celebrate style with simplicityBy Kristi Lanier (That's Shanghai)
Updated: 2006-08-10 09:45 When it comes to design, Shanghai's approach can be summed up as the flashier, the better. One need only glance at the neon-enhanced Pudong skyline for proof. Which is why the design aesthetic at new clothing and gift boutique Urban Tribe comes as something of a surprise.
Local Shanghainese Jasmine Mu and Ping Gao wanted their boutique-cum-gallery to be relevant to urbanites, while also capturing the peace and understatement they experienced on their many travels through China’s rural ethnic minority regions. The result, on the first floor of a 1920s-era home on Fuxing Lu, is a calming retreat decorated in earth tones and filled sparingly with unique, locally designed jewelry, pottery, clothing and photography. "Our aim is to introduce a natural lifestyle, like that of China's small villages, to city dwellers," says Mu. "In a city where people ask too much of themselves, we offer an alternative: one that is simple and brings a sense of tranquility." Clearly, Urban Tribe does not share the local disdain for all things old. A spacious covered patio at the rear looks onto a well-tended garden filled with cast-off antique furniture or pieces picked up for small change. The naturally-lit space invites loitering, and the owners hope to open a small cafe out here come August. Indoors, Mu and Gao have created a clean, subdued environment that emphasizes natural elements. They've retained the original hardwood floors, brickwork, and hearth, and used old wood and antiques for displays. The white walls are decorated with black and white images of Tibet, Myanmar, India and Laos by photographer Wang Jiang. (A special edition framed photograph goes for RMB 800.) Jewelry on offer includes silver and semi-precious stone necklaces, rings and bracelets (a small pedant costs RMB 195, while a one-of-a-kind necklace made from buffalo horn, black jet agate and silver costs RMB 2,580). Pottery jars range from RMB 90 to 280. The best value, though, might be the graceful tea sets designed by the owners-pick up a teapot for RMB 195 and miniature cups for RMB 15 each. Urban Tribe |
