Since the disaster of Hi Doing-which closed earlier this year after being open for less than a month-anyone thinking of opening a nightspot in the newly developed Nanxincang area (just off Dongsishitiao) would be forgiven for thinking twice before reaching for their wallets and setting up stall.

However, he who dares, wins, and Noble Family is the first high-end club of note to venture away from the Gongti Xilu formula in everything from location to decoration. Set in a magnificently restored Qing dynasty building, Noble Family immediately scores points for its unique interior (though none for its name). Sturdy wooden beams, exposed-brick walls and a chrome-finished bar constitute a refreshing aesthetic, which isn't obscured by the huge LCD displays so favored by its Gongti counterparts.

But this is Beijing, so don't expect a clubbing experience without Chinese characteristics: Bud girls clad in shiny suits, plates of fruit, Hennessy for RMB 16,800 and the occasional unnecessary accessory (mock antique telephones, anyone?) are on hand to delight the targeted nouveau riche clientele. This said, RMB 25 beers, chart-friendly hip hop and house, and a reasonable door charge (RMB 20 on weekends, includes one free drink) should be enough to attract a mixed crowd and elevate Noble Family above its tired competition.
