Ili River valley was one of the early centers of the matrilineal society, and Ili was the first place in China to have wasteland re-cultivated by soldiers.
    
Lijiang's architecture is noteworthy for the blending of elements from several cultures that have come together over many centuries.

Huizhou is one place where you can easily visualize the past, by strolling among old streets, picturesque countryside, and enchanting villages.

Shigatse has always been an important trade and administration center and also has political and religious significance, once being the seat of the Panchen Lama.
