Shanghai's antique stores By Angelil Dai (That's Shanghai) Updated: 2006-05-05 10:45 The best things in life are
often the least glaringly obvious. Shanghai hosts dozens, if not hundreds, of
small shops selling rare, one-of-a-kind items, though most are tucked away down
dark lanes or on back streets. To spare your shoe leather, we've scoured the
city and come up with a list of shops offering everything from affordable
knick-knacks to pricier, authentic treasures.
1. Old friends of the Sea
With a name that might make Hemingway smile, this is one antique store where
the fishing is good. Located down an alley (where else?) the small entrance
belies a surprisingly diverse range of antiques, many of which date from the
Qing Dynasty, and some of which relate to the sea. True, the space is tiny, but
the wares are cannily stacked-and prices start out small too, some of the more
minnow-like pieces can be purchased for as little as RMB 50. Big fish, up to RMB
10,000. Location: No. 1426, Hongqiaolu Tel: 021-64789876
2. Qing Ming Antique
This store has character to spare. On entering, you'll be greeted by the
owner, a kindly old man who, once salutations are dispensed with, will sit
quietly watching TV as customers browse. The store is full of unusual items,
including traditional old Shanghai-style fans, classical European-style lamps
and even telephones-said to be of World War II vintage and still functional.
Prices start at around RMB 25 and ascend into the four figure range (RMB
2,500). Location: No. 36, Yongjialu Tel: 021-64878934
3. China Antique
If lady luck hasn't been treating you well of late, well, your fortunes might
change with a visit to China Antique. This shop has given the lion, a Chinese
symbol of wealth and spirituality, a new lease on life. You might want to
purchase several, one for each room in your home to ensure good blessings for
the entire family. With prices ranging from RMB 500-2,000, you can't afford not
to believe. Location: No. 1660, Hongqiaolu Tel: 021-68904563
4. Jian Yuan
Traditional Chinese paintings and prints cover almost every surface in this
fascinating store. Taking pride of place, center shop, is a striking portrait of
Confucius, a.k.a. Kongzi. But the Sage isn't the only legend on display. Jian
Yuan is a theme store, and every picture, as they say, tells a story-the story
of one of China's historical figures. At RMB 200-3,000, you can purchase a
portrait of your hero of choice. Location: No.2 Lane 85 Wulumuqilu Tel:
