Cafe: Paris Patisserie Updated: 2006-04-07 16:23
The newest Paris Patisserie's quaint, old world French exterior
constrasts sharply with the flashiness of its neigbors on Lucky Street.
On the first floor is a bakery. The name may bring to mind delicate French
pastries but items are more Beijing than Paris. Can we all say meat floss buns?
Upstairs is a cafe painted in sunny colors. The tuna sandwich (RMB 30)
embodies Beijing's love affair with thousand island dressing. The sauce gives
every bite a sweetness that might be welcome on a salad but not so pleasing to
this tuna traditionalist. The hot dog (RMB 38) on the menu would probably offend
true Parisians but it was hearty and flavorful though more reminiscent of German
sausage than American fare. The entrees are a bit hit and miss but the Napolean
from the bakery tips the scale just a bit in their favor, with rich, sweet cream
in between delicate, buttery flakes.
