For those
in Beijing who have yet to experience the colourful ethnic minority culture of
Yunnan, or are just yearning for a return, Ma Da Mi - on Yuan Dynasty Bar Street
- offers a spirited substitute.
Since its opening in October 2004, Ma Da Mi has been providing its guests
with a unique atmosphere, a full range of entertainment including live singing
and dancing performances, and traditional food and drinks from the Mosuo region
of Lugu Lake, Yunnan Province.
In the Mosuo language, "Ma Da Mi" has two meanings; it is an expression of
love and good fortune. The bar's name is reflected in its cozy atmosphere. Its
creative interior consists of authentic Mosuo decoration and makes for a
soothing experience. Candle-lit tables and cushioned niches designed for
intimate groups circle around the main stage. An additional lofty lounge and two
private rooms offer more secluded options for patrons.
Traditional folk dances and songs are presented nightly. The acts are
performed by people of the Mosuo ethnic group temporarily residing in Beijing.
Each show lasts for almost 45 minutes, and includes a variety of musical
ensembles, choreographed dances, serenades, and audience participation.
Performances are held from 9:30 pm to midnight, with encores available. "We
encourage our guests to sing and dance with us. We want to create an enjoyable
environment, so we often give extra performances - even if it's near closing
time," said bar-owner Lei.
The ambience and friendly service at Ma Da Mi make it an ideal spot for
parties and celebrations. It's also an impressive stop for out-of-town guests
and travellers in China. An English drinks menu is available, with reasonably
priced drinks. The Mosuo specialty wines, Sulima and Guangdang, are imported
from Yunnan every month, and listed on the first page of the menu.
