Rescuers save 1,455 people from quake rubble

XINING - Rescuers had pulled 1,455 survivors out of collapsed buildings in northwest China's earthquake-struck Qinghai Province by Wednesday, a week after the devastating 7.1-magnitude quake, rescue headquarters said Thursday.

Rescue teams from across China had also helped treat 1,159 people injured in the quake and transported 314 others to hospitals. At least 96 injured have recovered and left hospitals by Thursday.

Health workers had disinfected more than 1 million square meters in the quake zone and distributed medicines and medical facilities worth 2.235 million yuan (US$327,355) by Wednesday.

No outbreak of epidemic has been reported in the quake zone.

Nineteen medical teams are patrolling the quake-zone to offer treatment and health consultation services to survivors.

Since the devastating quake jolted Qinghai on April 14, Qinghai provincial authorities and the province's charity organizations had received financial donations and disaster-relief materials worth nearly 1 billion yuan by Wednesday.

In addition, the central government has earmarked 560 million yuan in disaster-relief aid to Qinghai while the provincial government has pooled more than 626 million yuan.

China has received nearly US$4 million in quake aid and donations and condolences from almost 200 countries, and international and regional organizations by Wednesday, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The quake had left 2,183 people dead and 84 still missing as of 5 p.m. Wednesday. The earthquake had also left 12,135 injured, of whom 1,434 were in serious condition.
