March 31, 2008: Olympics torch relay ceremony is held in Beijing

On March 31, 2008, a ceremony to launch the torch relay preceding the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games was held in Tiananmen Square. President Hu Jintao personally lit the flame in a special cauldron during the ceremony and announced the start of the torch relay of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
