On Jan 19, 1974 soldiers and civilians of Parcels returned fire in self-defense against the puppet army of South Vietnam, who has violated our territorial waters, airspace, occupied our islands and killed our fishermen for the past few days. They also defended the territorial sovereignty of our country.

Jan 19, 1985: Deng Xiaoping meets with a delegation of the Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Company

On Jan 19, 1985 Deng Xiaoping met with a delegation of the Hong Kong Nuclear Investment Company, pointing out that it is a long-term sustainable policy to open up and introduce foreign investment, which cannot be changed within the 20th century and 50 years of the 21st century. "After 50 years," he declared, "China's economy will be more closely linked with those of foreign countries, and how can one break this inextricably link? Some people say that China's opening-up policy will lead to capitalism. Our answer is that our opening-up policy will not lead to capitalism. If it leads to capitalism, then our policy has failed. Implementing the opening-up policy will introduce some little teensy bits of capitalism, but the strength of socialism is greater and will achieve greater development. The proportion of socialism will always be dominant."

Jan 19—22, 2000: The Meeting for western region development is held

From Jan 19 to Jan 22, 2000 the State Council held the meeting for western region development. Wen Jiabao made the work report, further clarifying the significance, priorities and requirement of developing the western region. Zhu Rongji stressed in his speech the need to unify our thinking, enhance understanding, and correctly understand the Central Committee's strategy on implementing western development, solidly promoting western development. Conference for Western Regional Development marked the western development strategy into the implementation phase.
