Jan 8, 1954: The CPC Central Committee issues "Resolution on Developing Agricultural Producers' Cooperatives"

The "Resolution" summed up the experience of holding cooperative society, guiding individual farmers to develop the cooperative society through such forms as 1) mutual-aid teams, 2) elementary producers' cooperatives and 3) advanced producers' cooperatives. This is the correct path for socialist transformation of agriculture. By early 1955, the national agricultural producers' cooperatives have been developed over 480,000. In January 1955 the CPC Central Committee issued a "notice of reorganizing and consolidating agricultural producers' cooperatives" in order to solve problems in co-operative development. In October, the Sixth Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of the CPC adopted "Resolution on Agricultural Cooperation". On June 30, 1956 the Third Session of NPC promulgated the "model statutes of Advanced Agricultural producers' cooperatives", summing up the experience of development of agricultural cooperative movement from the primary stage to the advanced stage, pointing out that the development of cooperative movement should towards the advanced form. By the end of 1956, the socialist transformation of agriculture was basically completed.

Jan 8—10, 1975: The Second Plenary Session of the Tenth CPC Central Committee is held

On Jan 5 the CPC Central Committee issued a document to appoint Deng Xiaoping as Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission and chief of the general staff of PLA. The session discussed the preparatory work for the fourth plenary session and elected Deng Xiaoping as Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman of the Central Political Bureau Standing Committee.

Jan 8, 1976: Zhou Enlai dies of illness in Beijing

On Jan 8, 1976 Zhou Enlai, vice chairman of the CPC Central Committee, premier and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, died at the age of 78 in Beijing. Zhou Enlai was born in Huaian, Jiangsu Province in 1898. He studied in Japan in his early years. In 1919, he participated in the May Fourth Movement in Tianjin and went to France and Germany for a part-time job in 1920. Zhou Joined the CPC in 1921. After returning to China, he participated in and led many revolutions. After the founding of the New China, he worked hard to devote his own life to the country's prosperity and international exchanges. On Jan 15, Zhou Enlai's memorial meeting was held at the Great Hall of People and Deng Xiaoping delivered a memorial speech. Hundreds of people standing in silence sent Zhou's cremated remains to Babaoshan. Zhou Enlai's death sent the whole nation into mourning.
