1981: Young oil artist Luo Zhongli from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts garners fame when his portrait, Father, wins top award at the National Art Exhibition for Young Artists.

1982: Groundbreaking exhibition opens in Beijing at the National Art Museum with the Armand Hammer collection of Western paintings. It is the first time Western art is exhibited in the country.

1989: The China/Avant-Garde Exhibition pushes the "85 New Wave" to its climax, showing some seminal works by China's first generation of contemporary artists.

1992: First Guangzhou Art Biennale, attracting more than 350 artists from home and abroad, starts at a local stadium.

1993: Geng Jianyi, Zhang Peili, Fang Lijun, Wang Youshen and Yu Hong debut at the 45th Venice Biennale, the first time Chinese artists and their works appear at an art exhibition in the West.

1996: Shanghai Biennale is launched with support from the municipal government and Shanghai Art Museum.

2009: The Academy of Chinese Contemporary Art is established in Beijing, with most vanguard artists joining Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts president Luo Zhongli to become members.

April 2011: Sotheby's Hong Kong launches its spring series of Asian sales, with an auction of 105 lots, including works by Zhang Xiaogang, from the collection of 74-year-old Belgian food magnate Guy Ullens.
