Shanghai announces list of longevity stars
SHANGHAI - Shanghai has announced a list of the city's "longevity stars" and centenarian couples ahead of the Chongyang Festival, which falls on Saturday.
A 110-year-old woman is the oldest resident of the city and a man, at 108, is Shanghai's oldest man. The city also has three centenarian couples.
Many shared their longevity secrets which included good food, love and family.
Shanghai has more than 2,000 centenarians and 27,000 people aged between 95 to 100 years old. In 1953, there was only one centenarian in the city.
Shanghai's population has been aging in recent years. Of the city's registered population, about 4.58 million were over 60 years old at the end of 2016, 31.6 percent of the total population.
Those aged 80 and above reached 796,600 as of 2016, accounting for 5.5 percent of the total.
Shanghai's life expectancy in 2016 was 83.18 years.
The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month and is a day to pay respect to seniors.
